FASD Awareness Month

GLOW RED. ENGAGE. LEARN. TAKE ACTION.

Every September, communities come together to raise awareness of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and honor the strength, resilience and living experiences of those impacted.

This month is about more than awareness—it’s about action.

Through events, storytelling, learning opportunities and interactive engagement, we invite you to take part in the Proof Alliance FASD Awareness Month Challenge and help build visibility and connection across our communities.

The FASD Awareness Month Challenge

Join a month-long interactive challenge that helps you connect, learn and take action in ways that matter to you.

Throughout September, you’ll have opportunities to engage in meaningful activities that:

  • Increase awareness of FASD
  • Highlight living experiences and community voices
  • Encourage learning and exploration of key resources
  • Build connection through shared participation
  • And help GLOW RED across communities
  • Every action contributes to a larger movement—turning awareness into visibility, conversation and impact.

More details on ways to participate will be released soon.

Why September?

Each September, communities around the world recognize FASD Awareness Month and International FASD Awareness Day.

  • FASD Awareness Month is observed each September and includes
International FASD Awareness Day on September 9 (9/9).
  • The date was selected because the matching “9s” symbolize the nine months of pregnancy.
  • The observance raises awareness about FASD and the importance of alcohol-free pregnancy.
  • It also provides an opportunity to educate communities, reduce stigma and highlight resources and supports for individuals with FASD and their families.

The matching “9s” serve as a reminder of the nine months of pregnancy and the message that choosing an alcohol-free pregnancy can help prevent prenatal alcohol exposure and reduce the risk of FASD.

Why Red?

Each September, individuals, organizations and communities are encouraged to GLOW RED in recognition of FASD Awareness Month and International FASD Awareness Day.

  • GLOW RED helps raise visibility for FASD.
  • It shows solidarity with individuals and families impacted by FASD.
  • The campaign sparks conversation and increases awareness in communities.
  • It unites people through a shared visual symbol of support and understanding.

Red represents connection, awareness and collective action, making it a powerful symbol of support throughout FASD Awareness Month.
