EmpowerED: Understanding Risk, Respecting Choice and Keeping the Balance
Join us March 24th online at 6:30 p.m. CST for an empowering webinar where caregivers and loved ones learn how to balance safety with independence. We’ll explore the concept of “Dignity of Risk,” why taking some risks fosters growth and confidence and share practical tools to help your loved one make decisions safely while honoring their choices.
Meet Our Speaker: Jennifer Billington
Jennifer (Jen) Billington brings over 30 years of experience supporting individuals with disabilities. She specializes in formal person-centered planning using MAPs, PATHs and Liberty Plans through waiver funding. Jen educates families, legal representatives, Case Managers and DSPs on balancing what is “Important To” and “Important For” each person, while building skills to foster dignity of risk and thoughtful decision-making.
Understanding the Dignity of Risk
This interactive workshop helps families explore how to balance safety with supporting their loved one’s choices. Everyone takes risks as part of learning and growing, and the Dignity of Risk emphasizes that making choices—even risky ones—is essential for building confidence, skills and a meaningful life. We’ll discuss how personal fears can influence decisions and how to support independence while keeping your loved one safe.
Practical Tools for Supporting Independence
Families will leave with actionable resources to help their loved one make decisions safely and confidently. From Risk Assessment guides to decision-making worksheets and step-by-step tools like SODAS and Donut Sort, participants will gain strategies to balance safety, respect personal values, and encourage growth—so their loved one can live a full, self-directed and meaningful life.
