Updated Alcohol Education Signage Across Minnesota

In 2026, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), working with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS), updated the alcohol education signage required in licensed alcohol establishments across Minnesota.

As part of the update, Proof Alliance provided expertise to help ensure the prenatal alcohol exposure messaging reflects current public health guidance and uses person-centered, non-stigmatizing language. The Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association (MMBA) is helping raise awareness of the updated signage among municipal liquor operations and other licensed alcohol retailers across the state.

Together, these updates help ensure Minnesotans have access to current alcohol education materials where alcohol-related decisions are made.

Why the Signage Was Updated

Alcohol education signage has long provided important public health information in licensed establishments throughout Minnesota.

The updated materials strengthen the prenatal alcohol exposure portion of the required signage by providing additional information about fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), reflecting current public health guidance and connecting individuals and families with trusted resources and support.

The materials also continue to provide important information related to impaired driving and underage drinking.

What’s New?

The updated materials expand prenatal alcohol exposure education by:

  • Going beyond a single warning statement to provide more information about prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).
  • Reflecting current public health guidance that no amount, type or timing of alcohol use during pregnancy is considered safe.
  • Connecting individuals and families to trusted resources for education, support and additional information.
  • Using person-centered, non-stigmatizing language that recognizes the dignity and experiences of individuals and families impacted by FASD.

These updates help ensure Minnesotans have access to accurate information that supports informed decisions and encourages supportive communities.

Proof Alliance’s Role

As Minnesota and the nation’s leading FASD support and prevention organization, Proof Alliance provided expertise on prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD messaging throughout the development process.

Our work extends beyond developing educational materials. Proof Alliance partners with health care providers, public health agencies, community organizations, Tribal communities, schools, faith communities and other local partners to expand access to prevention education and support throughout Minnesota. These partnerships help ensure accurate information reaches people where they live, work and receive care.

Working alongside Minnesota Department of Health, we helped ensure the updated materials:

  • Reflect current evidence and best practices.
  • Use respectful, accessible language.
  • Recognize the experiences of individuals and families impacted by FASD.
  • Connect communities with trusted information and support.

This collaboration represents a shared commitment to reducing stigma, increasing understanding and ensuring people have the resources they need.

Supporting People Beyond the Sign

Education is one important part of creating healthier communities. Support, trusted relationships and community partnerships matter, too.

Through the Regional Prevention Collaboratives Grant, Proof Alliance partners with organizations across Minnesota to build local capacity, provide education and deliver evidence-informed prevention services related to prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD.

The Regional Prevention Collaboratives strengthen communities by helping partners:

  • Increase awareness of prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD.
  • Promote alcohol-free pregnancies through evidence-informed education.
  • Build local knowledge and prevention capacity.
  • Connect individuals and families with trusted resources and support.

Reduce stigma through compassionate, person-centered education. These partnerships recognize that prevention is most effective when trusted local organizations—including healthcare providers, public health agencies, schools, community organizations, Tribal partners, faith communities and other local leaders—work together to share consistent, evidence-based information.
